Game

Gamemodes

Splegg was played in several different formats, from casual free-for-all lobbies up to organized 4v4 clan wars. Looking for specific tournament series (SWC, SDT, ODC, …) instead? See Organizations.

Formats

FFA

Usually 20 players

Free-for-all

The default casual lobby mode — everyone drops in together and it's every player for themselves. Standard lobbies held 20, but special large-scale events were hosted for up to 100 players, and even as many as 200 at times.

1v1

2 players

Duel

The most competitive format and the backbone of the tournament scene — every World Cup, Major, and Summer Tournament ran on 1v1.

2v2

4 players

Doubles

Used for doubles tournaments (STA's SDT series among others).

3v3

6 players

Triples

Ran occasionally for triples tournaments (STA's STT series) — more of a tournament-specific format than a constant focus.

4v4

8 players

Clan war

The classic team format — this is what a clan war meant. See Clans for rosters and results.

FieldMC era

Arena mode

FieldMC added an Arena — a dedicated 1v1 dueling mode, separate from the standard lobby games. Two big differences set it apart:

  • No timer. Standard lobby games were timed with 20 players and could end in a draw if nobody had been finished off by the time limit. Arena matches ran until someone actually won.
  • Smaller maps. Arena matches were usually played on shorter maps built with only 1–2 layers, instead of the standard 3.

The basics

How a round played out

Whatever the format, the core loop stayed the same. Everyone spawned onto the map with a 10-second head start to get their bearings before being handed the Splegg gun — a shovel that fired high-speed, high-popping eggs. The eggs did no damage to players directly; they destroyed the blocks beneath them instead. Standard maps were built in 3 stacked layers: get knocked off the top layer and you dropped to the next one down, not straight out of the game.

Falling off the bottom layer was final — that dropped you into water and eliminated you. Last player standing won the round.
